“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
Devotion for May 16, 2025
When a house is on fire, you don’t bring gasoline—you bring water. The same is true for your words.
You’ve seen it—maybe in a text you wish you could unsend, a conversation that went sideways, or a careless comment that cut deeper than you knew. Words can scorch or soothe, destroy or deliver. And Scripture doesn’t mince words about their weight: what comes out of your mouth can either build up or break down.
Ephesians 4:29 isn’t just a reminder to “watch your mouth.” It’s a call to ministry with your mouth. Every sentence is a seed—plant despair or plant hope. And in a world that’s constantly tearing people apart, God is calling you to speak like someone who’s been with Jesus.
Not everything you think needs to be said. Not every opinion is holy just because it’s yours. God doesn’t ask you to be silent—He calls you to be strategic. Speak in a way that brings life, not just noise.
Paul’s challenge isn’t about being fake—it’s about being faithful. He isn’t telling you to sugarcoat truth. He’s asking you to season it with grace. There’s a difference between correction that heals and criticism that harms. One calls people higher. The other pushes them away.
Think about the people around you today—your spouse, your kids, your coworkers, even the stranger online. Someone is hanging on by a thread, and your words might be the thing that keeps them holding on.
So speak carefully. Speak intentionally. Speak like someone who knows how much grace you’ve been given.
And when you don’t know what to say—say nothing. Silence, too, can be holy.
Today’s Takeaway:
Your words are either a weapon or a well. Draw water. Not blood.
Prayer for May 16, 2025
Father, teach me to speak like You speak—full of grace, truth, and life. Forgive me for every careless word, and heal the wounds I’ve caused. Make my mouth a vessel of peace, not pride; a source of healing, not harm. Let what I say reflect who You are. May the people around me feel Your love in the way I speak to them—especially when it’s hard. Guard my lips. Purify my heart. And make me a person whose words always lead others closer to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
