Devotion for May 9, 2025
Some mornings feel like war zones.
You wake up already anxious. The to-do list looms. The doctor’s report still stings. Relationships are tense. You feel like you barely survived yesterday—and here comes today, asking more of you.
That’s the kind of morning David was having when he wrote Psalm 59.
He was being hunted. Betrayed. Surrounded by people who wanted him dead. But instead of collapsing into fear, he did something that might seem strange in the face of danger: he sang.
Not because the threat was gone—but because God was still there.
You see, David didn’t wait for his circumstances to change before praising God. He didn’t need to see the deliverance to declare God’s strength. He sang because he remembered. God had been his fortress. God had been his refuge. And that memory gave him faith for the moment he was standing in.
Maybe today, you feel surrounded too. Maybe you’re under pressure that feels unfair or exhausted by battles no one sees. But you don’t have to wait for everything to calm down before lifting your voice. You can praise Him in the storm—not because you’re ignoring reality, but because you’re anchored in a greater one.
God’s love doesn’t clock in when life gets easier. His strength doesn’t arrive only when the odds shift in your favor. He is a fortress—not just when you feel strong, but especially when you don’t.
So even if your voice shakes, sing.
Even if the morning feels more like mourning, choose praise.
You don’t need the whole day figured out to worship the One who holds it all.
Let this be the morning you remember: your God is strong, His love is steadfast, and He is still your refuge.
Prayer for May 9, 2025
Father, when I wake up to fear, remind me of Your faithfulness. When the weight feels too heavy, lift my eyes to Your strength. You’ve carried me before, and You will carry me again. Help me sing—not because life is easy, but because You are good. Be my refuge today, my fortress in the middle of the fight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
