Paul isn’t asking you to pretend life is always pleasant. He’s inviting you to see God in the dark. “Give thanks in all circumstances,” not for all circumstances. There’s a difference. This isn’t denial—it’s defiance. Defying despair. Defying fear. Declaring: God still reigns here, even here.
Think of Job, whose praise rose up from the ashes. Or Jesus, who broke bread with trembling hands, knowing the cross was next. Gratitude in the valley doesn’t mean you’re okay—it means you believe God is still with you, even if everything else walks away.
So today, whether you’re surrounded by celebration or silence, dare to give thanks. Not because your story is finished, but because the Author still holds the pen.

I want to know You, not just in joy, but in the quiet, broken places too. Amen.
